Mearns was the first westerner to describe the pacific pocket mouse, though he did so incorrectly, describing it as a species, instead of a subspecies in 1898, from specimens collected from 1892 to 1894. The pacific pocket mouse was declared endangered in 1993 from a population of less than 100 individuals. ĭivergence in Perognathus, the genus that pacific pocket mice belong to, that produced the modern species groups, might have begun as early as the late Miocene, 23.03 to 5.3 million years ago. They typically live in sandy soils on marine terraces, though they have been recorded living in coastal sage scrub, coastal dunes and river alluvium. They are found no further inland than 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Marina Del Rey, Wilmington, Newport Beach, Dana Point, San Onofre, Santa Margarita River Mouth, Camp Pendleton Military Base, San Diego's Zoo, and Institute of Conservation Research are places where the pacific pocket mouse has been recorded, rereleased, or captive bred.
