They typically live in sandy soils on marine terraces, though they have been recorded living in coastal sage scrub, coastal dunes and river alluvium. They are found no further inland than 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Marina Del Rey, Wilmington, Newport Beach, Dana Point, San Onofre, Santa Margarita River Mouth, Camp Pendleton Military Base, San Diego's Zoo, and Institute of Conservation Research are places where the pacific pocket mouse has been recorded, rereleased, or captive bred.
